How we calculate kitchen remodel costs

The calculator is a transparent five-input model. Every number it uses is published below. Updated quarterly against new closed-bid data.

The model

For a given kitchen, the estimated fixed-bid range is calculated as:

fixed_bid = (sqft × tier_per_sf × region_multiplier)
            + layout_change_addon
            + permit_fees

Per-square-foot tier ranges

TierPer sq ft (low)Per sq ft (high)What's included
Economy refresh$180$230Cabinet refacing or paint, entry-grade quartz, LVP flooring, fixture swap.
Mid-range$320$480Semi-custom shaker cabinets, premium quartz, engineered hardwood, full electrical + plumbing rough-in.
Premium / custom$620$980Custom inset cabinets, Calacatta-quartz or natural stone, structural changes, premium fixtures.

Regional multipliers

RegionMultiplierWhy
Ventura County (inland)1.00×Baseline.
Ventura County (coastal)1.07×Marine-grade hardware, moisture control, Coastal Commission-related rework risk.
Greater LA (inland)1.04×Slightly higher trade labor rates.
LA Westside / Beach Cities1.18×Premium labor markets, parking restrictions, HOA reviews, coastal-zone overlap.
Other Southern California1.02×Catch-all for OC / IE / SD.

Layout-change add-ons

LayoutAdd-on (low)Add-on (high)
Same layout$0$0
Move sink or appliances$2,400$4,800
Remove a wall (structural)$9,800$22,400

Wall removal includes engineering, LVL beam, posts, drywall finishing, additional plan check time.

Permit fees

When permit-required is checked, $1,400–$3,200 is added. This range reflects published fee schedules across Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, Moorpark, Camarillo, Oxnard, Ventura, and Ojai for typical kitchen-only scopes (verified April 2026). Cities with more complex plan review (Thousand Oaks, Camarillo) trend high; smaller municipalities trend low.
